#4: Joy to the World {by Tracey}

#4 joy2

Joy to the world, the Lord is come.

Let earth receive her King.

Let every heart prepare Him room.

And heaven and nature sing!

He sings it – that Third Day lead singer. He sings in the range I can always hit. Let every heart prepare Him room.  Only this time, these six words prick my ears.  Just when was the last time I prepared room for Jesus?

I mean, I can’t do the 15-minute house sweep for His unexpected arrival. Or stock the basement freezer for a long-expected stay.  I can’t even dust those pesky baseboards for His divine approval.  Just how do I prepare Him room?

Christina Rossetti, beloved children’s poet and prose architect, raised this response:

Prepare Him room in my heart? It’s not an easily reached location, this heart of mine. It often hides, or goes numb and cold {an inhospitable locale for a Savior}, or even shatters from strain of self-imposed stress. How do I even find such an elusive boarding house?

For where your treasure it, there your heart will be also {Matthew 6:21}.

But then I remembered – we exalt our treasures, don’t we?  We hold them up to the light.  We gaze often upon their features. We admire. We revere. And what we embrace eventually embraces us.

We can even embrace those not-so-treasured treasures. You know, Aunt Myrtle’s stamp collection, or Uncle Larry’s exhaustive slide show of Yosemite’s Giant Sequoia’s. What I’m saying is that we can learn to love. We can learn to find our heart.

Now the question remains: what {or Who} will you hold up to the light?  Upon whose features will you gaze? Admire?  Revere? Worship? For whom are you preparing room?

Here are just a few ideas from across the web {and inside these four walls} to help you prepare Him room this Christmas.  May you find your treasure in all that is Christ.

1. Remember His Story.  Celebrate with a Jesse Tree. Or a Cradle-to-Cross wreath.

2. Remember His Presence – store all the bibles in your house under the Christmas Tree and force yourself to spend time with Him {can you make 10 min?} each morning where it all began: under a tree, with The Word made flesh, and a babe born to die for us.

3. Remember your First Love – Go on a nativity hunt and place home-made Thank You cards in the mailboxes of each family prominently displaying Christ, our first love, this Christmas.

4.Remember His Own {the poor, the widow, the orphan} – Bring a hot drink, homemade meal, and the Bread of Life to the lonely and the lost in your neighborhood.  If you don’t know where to start, call your church.  They’re bound to know how to connect you to His People living right in your own backyard.

5. Remember, it’s Jesus’ Birthday. Give HIM the choicest gifts of the Season. {Whatever you did for the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me. Matt 25:40}

What will you do to prepare Him room? Won’t you share?  We’d love to see a little snapshot of your preparations at our Facebook page. {Click HERE to jump THERE}.
